TOMMY LEE: University Of Nebraska Senate To Vote On Resolution About Reality Show Contract

October 21, 2004

Maggie Stehr of the Daily Nebraskan is reporting that the biting reality of the controversy surrounding the Tommy Lee (photos) reality show has some University of Nebraska-Lincoln Academic Senate members all Tommied out.

Although general interest in the rocker is softening, the executive committee discussed faculty concerns with the reality show at Wednesday's (Oct. 20) executive committee meeting, said President Wes Peterson.

The senate plans to draft a resolution formally stating the faculty's position on the issue and present the resolution for vote at the Nov. 2 senate meeting, he said.

Upon the reality show’s announcement, faculty members inundated Peterson with e-mails ranging from outrage to enthusiasm, he said.

The resolution would sum up faculty opinions and address whether the image projected by a network reality show is appropriate for a university setting, he said.

"It is important to advertise to the world that we are a serious academic institution, and I don't think a reality show will get that done," Peterson said. "The image of a reality show is scandal and controversy, which doesn't fit into serious academia." Read more.
